About Hidrent

Hidrent is the only on-demand home service company partnered with the IAFF-FC dedicated exclusively to helping firefighters supplement their incomes during their off-duty days. It connects firefighters with homeowners and local businesses needing "handyman-type" help that firefighters can complete in between shifts.

Off-duty

As seen on Shark Tank, Hidrent is the only task-based online service that matches customers with off-duty firefighters. Most firefighters work 24 hours on duty, followed by 48 hours off duty. Firefighters are uniquely qualified to continue serving their community during their time off.

On-demand

Hiring an off-duty firefighter is mutually beneficial. This supplements their income and leverages their skills and expertise while you get the help you need from someone you can trust to get the job done right.

The Problem

In 2020 Dave H, founder and CEO of Hidrent, approached GoGrow for help because his current apps weren't working as he expected. This was costing him a lot of money because of bad development practices in license fees, maintenance and bug fixing.

Our Approach

We recommended to rebuild the entire platform since this would greatly reduce operational costs. It also allowed for easier maintenance and future upgrades by us or any other developer.

The race to Shark Tank

Less than a year after we released the MVP, Dave and Hidrent were selected to participate on Shark Tank. We didn’t know when the episode would be live, but we had brand-new designs and features to build in just a few weeks.

We grouped up, brought more developers and a project manager, and completed a huge revamp in a couple of weeks. Great kudos to the team who worked on this!

Building on the Foundation

New Architecture

Although Dave decided to re-do the entire project, we were able to use practically everything from the server and part of the applications we already made. This proved that the strategy we implemented earlier turned out to be helpful in the short run.

UX / UI Re-Designs

Dave decided to craft new and fresh designs since the UI and UX could have been better. We started working with an external agency on the branding, discovery phase and posterior UI designs. It took a couple of months before we got the final designs and could start the development.

The Result

We had a team of three developers working independently on the three sub-projects. Weekly meetings were scheduled to show the “sprint” progress and get feedback. Once the project was released, we provided ongoing support for new features and bug fixing.

We keep improving

After 4 years, we’ve continued working together on new and promising features. The platform is super stable. We’ve helped Hidrent save money in DevOps, maintenance, and User Management by changing the architecture, backend, and admin panel. All of this has led to high customer satisfaction.

"Working at Hidrent was special because I took on a new role as a Technical Leader. This allowed me to be present during business meetings and make important decisions with the founding team."
